Traveling to Australia in Jul/Aug 2009 with 2 yr old. Driving from Sydney to Brisbane. Would a motorhome be ok?

What would the weather in Sydney, enroute to Brisbane & Melbourne be like? What sort of clothing would be needed? Would hiring a motorhome be appropriate for the drive from Sydney to Brisbane end-July, early August?

Yes it would…it will be the middle of our winter but our winters are mild compared to Europe & the US…you will see a lot more of the country in a motor home & have the flexibility to stop off at places for a closer look.

Sydney is halfway between Melbourne & Brisbane …as far as weather is concerned , Melbourne gets a lot colder , wetter …you’ll meet a lot of elderly victorians on the road heading north to Queensland for the winter …caravans in tow.

Bring warmer gear with you ..no need for really heavy coats unless you are spending a lot of time in Melbourne …in Brisbane at that time of year I go to work without a coat except on the odd cooler day.

    Have fun..enjoy !

I would not bother hiring a motorhome for travel from Sydney to Brisbane. They are actually quite cumbersome to drive and it’s illegal to just pull up anywhere on the side of the road or in roadside park to spend the night. You would have to check the motorhome into a caravan or tourist park, which charge an overnight fee.

I’ve never heard of anyone hiring a motorhome for the drive from Sydney to Brisbane, because that’s a bit of an overkill and the drive itself isn’t that far. It would be cheaper and easier to hire a car and stay at hotels along the way. The drive from Sydney to Brisbane is only 12 hours. If you stopped at Coffs Harbour, you could do the trip easily in 2 days. Motorhomes are designed for more lengthy touring.

Sydney is located between Melbourne and Brisbane; so from Sydney you either drive north to Brisbane or south to Melbourne. At that time of the year, I would recommend a winter coat for both Sydney and Melbourne, and jeans and jumper for Brisbane. Even Brisbane can get quite cold and windy at that time of the year. Oh and make sure you pack raincoats and umbrellas.

Motorhomes are costly to hire and run and are a pain on the roads. Get yourself a comfy car with child seat ( 6 CYLINDERS) and you will enjoy yourself so much more. Winters north of Newcastle are pretty mild and dry – if your into camping or just sight seeing you’ll enjoy yourself so much more and save heaps on petrol and the hassle of drinving a minitruck around.

I did the drive from Sydney to Perth in just a car and staying at motels. It took 7 days. Seriously it would be much easier and cheaper to do it in a car
